<p>Vibrio cholerae bacterium, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This bacterium causes cholera, an infection of the small intestine. The outer membrane (outer blue line) and cytoplasmic membrane (inner blue line) are seen. This gram- negative bacterium grows up to 0.8 micrometres in length. It is a water-borne pathogen, which is transmitted to humans in contaminated food and water. It produces a toxin that causes diarrhoea and extreme dehydration, which may be fatal if untreated. Outbreaks are associated with poor sanitary conditions and are often epidemic. Magnification x40,000 at 5x7cm size.</p>
