<p>Caricature by Powys Evans (Quiz) before 1926 of Russian conductor Serge Koussevitzky (1874 - 1951). Koussevitzky was the celebrated chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. He started his career as a celebrated Double Bass player. Koussevitzky is remembered as the conductor under which the Boston orchestra became one of the world's best. He was associated with such ventures as Tanglewood. He was a canny and very active champion of contemporary music, which he commissioned from such composers as Ravel, Prokoviev, Stravinsky and Gershwin.</p>
