Thyroid cancer cells

Item # 1154051

Steve Gschmeissner

Thyroid cancer. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through thyroid can- cer cells. The cells have abnormally large nuclei (green) and pink cytoplasm. These are rapidly- dividing cells. Thyroid cancer has one of the highest cure rates of all cancers. Symptoms occur as the swelling gland presses on other structures in the neck. Treatment is a thyroidectomy, removal of the entire gland. After surgery, radioactive iodine is taken. Thyroid tissues concentrate iod- ine, and the radioactivity destroys any remaining cancerous tissue. After a thyroidectomy, thyroid gland hormone supplements must be taken for life. Magnification unknown.
