<p>Villi in the small intestine, fluorescent light micrograph. Villi are finger-like projections from the inner lining of the small intestine that serve to increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients from food. Each villus has a red outer layer surrounding blood vessels that carry the nutrients into the bloodstream. Cell nuclei have been stained green. Magnification: x50 when printed 10 cm wide.</p>
