<p>The seeds of the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis, a tall shrub from tropical Africa, also known as Palma christi. The seeds yield castor oil, which is used as a purgative and lubricant, but they also contain ricin, one of the most powerful poisons known. Ricin is sometimes used in the treatment of cancer, as it can be targeted to destroy cancer cells whilst leaving normal cells untouched.</p>
