Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was born in Brooklyn, New York. As he grew up, he decided to carry on in his uncle Henry’s footsteps — to be an artist. When he was in his early twenties, Edward enrolled at the Art Students’ League in New York City, where he met many fellow aspiring artists. He went on to become the art director at Harper's magazine and designed a series of monthly posters for Harper's that won enormous critical acclaim. After leaving Harper's in 1901, Penfield continued to be extremely active in both design and illustration. By the turn of the century, Penfield's reputation as an important graphic designer was assured.
