<p>Orchid pollinia (Ludisia discolor), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Ludisia discolor, the jewel orchid is also known as Haemaria discolor), has distinct pollinia. Two pollen-bearing pollinia are produced at the tip of the anther. Each pollinia is a pod housing waxy pollen grains attached to filaments. Pollinia are transferred to the body of the pollinating insect, and then to the stigmatic surface of another orchid flower. Most orchids have waxy pollinia. Some species of the milkweed family (Asclepiadaceae) also have pollinia. Magnification: x12 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.</p>
