Old and New Cape Cod Canal Bridges, 1935

Item # 2310949

6/10/1935-Bourne, MA- The opening of the new Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge across the Cape Cod Canal will be marked by a huge celebration on the part of Cape Cod residents. In this picture, the old and the new bridges form a great contrast. The bridge in the foregreound, spanning the Cape Cod Canal at Bourne, is a scant 6 feet above the water when closed. The new bridge, its graceful arches visible in the rear, clears the channel by 136 feet, permitting passage of vessels of all sizes.
