Native American census roll. Artwork of a census roll of an Indian band at Mille Lac, Minnesota, USA. This census was compiled in 1849 by Nago-nabe, a Chipeway Indian, to send to a US agent to calculate payments. Individuals are denoted by their family or totem sign, and here a pictogram depicting the common name of the chief in each family is used. The strokes below indicate the number of individuals in the family. The figure at bottom right is the sacerdotal chief. This census roll indicates 34 families consisting of 108 people. Artwork from The Origin of Civilisation and the Primitive Condition of Man (Sir John Lubbock, 1870).
