A steam hammer is a steam-powered hammer used to shape heated metal in a metal-works. It consists of a hammer-like piston (centre) located within a cylinder, which is raised by the pressure of steam injected into the lower part of the cylinder. When the steam is removed, the hammer falls, hitting and shaping the metal placed beneath it. Published in 1854.</p>
