Mitosis

Item # 1154351

Paul Andrews

Mitosis. Fluorescence micrograph of six cells at different stages of mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. During mitosis the chromosomes (white and yellow), which contain two identical chromatids, are separated and divided equally between the cells. This occurs when microtubules (blue) attach to the chromosomes and then contract pulling them apart. The cell organelles and cytoplasm are also shared. The cells are then separated by cytoplasmic cleavage. Clockwise from top right the stages shown are; metaphase, interphase, late anaphase, early anaphase, cytokinesis and telophase.
