John Fleming Gould (1906–1996) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and went on to become one of the twentieth century's most versatile American artists. His creative output embraced multiple mediums (oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pen-and-ink originals), with works housed in numerous private collections around the world. The subjects that most captivated him were the landscapes, waterways, and historic sites of the Hudson River Valley, and the founding story of the American nation. He served as an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post for more than eight years, creating the kind of evocative, narrative-driven artwork that defined mid-century American magazine culture.
