Heart valve and strings, SEM

Item # 1145869

Susumu Nishinaga

Heart valve and strings, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the mitral valve (upper centre), in the left ventricle of the heart. The heart strings (thread-like structures) are known as the chordae tendineae. The mitral valve lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle, helping to control the flow of blood between these two chambers of the heart. The tissue at top is part of the left atrium. The structures across bottom, known as trabeculae carneae, are muscular, columnar protrusions found on the internal surface of the ventricles (here the left ventricle).
