Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the great masters of late Edo-period Japanese ukiyo-e, celebrated for his imaginative, energetic woodblock prints. A pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi first gained recognition for dramatic depictions of legendary warriors and heroes, often portrayed with elaborate tattoos, dynamic poses, and vivid compositions. His remarkably diverse body of work also included landscapes, animals, kabuki actors, beautiful women, folklore, satire, and humorous scenes featuring his beloved cats. His distinctive style combines bold color, expressive linework, theatrical movement, and a playful sense of invention, while some of his landscapes incorporate Western-inspired shading and perspective.
