Excavation at Galeria

Item # 1144432

Javier Trueba

MODEL RELEASED. Excavation at Galeria. Excavations at this site started in 1982. Occupation floors, or layers of earth that at one time made up the cave floor, were discovered. It is thought that Galeria acted as a natural trap and that humans and carnivorous animals come to it to eat the meat of the animals that had fallen in. The fossils at Galeria date back to between 250,000 and 400,000 years. Galeria is one of several sites in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, that have been studied on and off over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO.
