Item # 1134794

Mark Winter

Electron orbitals, computer model. An electron orbital is a region around an atomic nucleus (not seen) in which one or a pair of electrons is most likely to exist. For each orbital, The red area is where an electron has a positive wavefunction, and the blue area is where the wavefunction is negative. Electrons orbitals are defined by the regions in which an electron may not be found, which is known as a node. The number and distribution of electrons in an atom's orbitals plays a major role in determining the reactivity and chemical properties of the atom.
