American painter Thomas Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School and one of the most influential landscape painters of 19th-century America. Born in England and emigrating to the United States as a teenager, Cole became captivated by the wilderness of the Hudson River Valley, Catskill Mountains, and other American landscapes, which became central subjects in his work. His paintings combine careful observation of nature with dramatic light, atmospheric effects, majestic scenery, and carefully arranged compositions that convey a sense of awe and grandeur. Beyond depicting the American landscape, Cole infused his work with moral, religious, and allegorical themes, exploring ideas about humanity, nature, civilization, and the passage of time. His romantic and highly detailed approach to landscape painting helped establish a distinctly American artistic tradition and profoundly influenced generations of American landscape artists.
