Brewery kettle, 19th century

Item # 1408337

Brewery kettle, 19th century cutaway artwork. This the boiling stage where a liquid known as wort is boiled with hops inside a metal container to impart flavour and produce beer. Here, a fire is being used to supply heat, while a stirring apparatus is being used to mix the beer. The array of circular elements is a cross-section through piping, possibly used to cool the boiling liquid. Engraving from 'Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie' (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), published in France circa 1880.
