Silhouetted greater Sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis canadensis) fly across a huge sun. Waterbirds over-populate the refuge (it has about 17,000 greater Sandh ill cranes alone) because there's a great deal of food planted here, and because there is very little wetland habitat left along the Rio Grande.
