Artwork of drug transmission to brain nerve cell

Item # 1154115

John Bavosi

Drug action on nerve cell. Illustration of the transmission of a drug from a capillary into a nerve cell of the brain. The walls of a brain capillary (red, at bottom) are much less permeable to molecules than those elsewhere in the body. However small molecules (blue spheres) can leave the capillary and travel up to the astrocyte (orange), which supports and selectively screens molecules from the nerve cell (green). This blood- brain barrier stops harmful molecules from reaching the brain. Drugs treating Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia reach the brain in this way. Dendrites (pink) carry nerve signals from other nerve cells.
