Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and specialized in painting landscapes, especially marine subjects. He was born in Boston and pursued his early career as an illustrator who contributed to magazines. He opened a studio, learned the basics of painting, and began producing oil work after only about a year of self-training. Homer served in the American Civil War, where he sketched scenes of battle and camp life. Homer also worked extensively with watercolors, often depicting his working vacations.
