Tesla coil experiment. Electrical streamers sparking outwards from a coil at the laboratory operated by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899 to 1900. Here, the 12-million-volt discharge of an electrical oscillator has caused the nitrogen and oxygen in the air to burn in a flame-like display 20 metres across. The coil named after Tesla is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour.
