The American physicist, Richard Feynman, 1918- 1988. As a young man, Feynman worked on the atomic bomb (the Manhattan project). In the late 1940s he developed \quantum electrodynamics\" (QED). This QED research contributed methods on field theory which have been widely used. In it he showed that the interaction between electrons can be described quantitatively as a sum of terms. Each term can be written as a Feynman diagram consisting of lines called Feynman propagators which describe the exchange of particles. For this more precise working out of the behaviour of electrons, he shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1965 with Schwinger and Tomonaga. Feynman was renowned as an entertainer.
