Richard Feynman giving a lecture at CERN

Item # 2584135

Richard Feynman (1918-88), US physicist and Nobel Laureate. Educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton, Feynman became involved in the Manhattan Project during World War 2. After the war he moved to California and began working on quantum field theory. He showed that interactions between electrons could be regarded as the exchange of virtual photons, and developed Feynman Diagrams to illustrate each possible interaction. This work on Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) led to his sharing the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. A most colourful character, Feynman was a gifted lecturer and virtuoso player of the bongo drums. Photographed at CERN, Geneva, in 1970.
