Rabbit eye. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the eye of a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The rabbit has a typical mammalian eye structure, with a hemispherical rear chamber (centre), a biconvex lens (red) and a cornea (far left) with pronounced curvature. The rabbit is mainly nocturnal, so it has a shorter rear chamber to accommodate the shorter focal length of the lens. The rabbit also lives a life dominated by activity on the horizon to detect predators, so the eye has a narrow strip on the retina (visual streak) where the ganglion (nerve) cell density is high. The retina is inside the eye, on the rear surface (right). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
