<p>Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, conservationist, National Geographic fellow and regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. His hallmarks are a sense of humor and a midwestern work ethic. To date, Sartore has completed portraits of more than 11,000 species.</p>

<p>Portraits of Orangei, the last dusky seaside sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus nigrescens). This species went extinct in 1987, after their last habitats in northeast Florida were ruined by man, from the construction of an expressway to mosquito spraying. The birds are kept in vials of alcohol in the Natural History Museum at Florida State University.</p>
