His book Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (\"Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy\"), first published in 1687, laid the foundations for classical mechanics. Newton also made seminal contributions to optics and shares credit with Gottfried Leibniz for the development of calculus. The illustration shows the title pages of 2 of his treatise on optics, with the visible spectrum projected across it, and his Principia Mathematica.</p>
