<p>Seventh-grade student Trevor (Osment) takes his social studies assignment very seriously. His teacher Eugene (Spacey) has his students think of an idea to change the world and tells them to put it into action. Trevor comes up with the idea of doing a good deed for someone who is then supposed to do a favor for someone else as a way to pay the favor forward. Trevor's cocktail waitress/recovering alcoholic mom Arlene (Hunt) finds herself wary of both the project and the teacher.
