Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) - whose artwork has become iconic of our country's spirit - celebrated the timeless truths about America that endure despite the changing times and circumstances. Some of Rockwell's paintings and illustrations inspire hope and optimism, while others bring humor and nostalgia to mundane moments, and still others shine a light on critical social issues. From family gatherings and goodhearted childhood mischief to the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement, he used his art to truthfully memorialize everyday American life. For over 60 years, Norman Rockwell painted this country and its people with unabashed frankness and poignancy, allowing him to become one of the greatest artists and documentarians in American history.

In 1963, Rockwell began to create paintings that allowed him to address more substantive matters. Responsible for helping to shape the perception of American society and culture in the 20th century, Rockwell could be considered a documentarian during the Civil Rights Movement. Now free to openly express his views on current events, Rockwell painted some of his most powerful works during a dangerous time when intimidation and murder were tools regularly used to suppress the basic rights of African-Americans.
