<p>Larsen C Ice Shelf rift, aerial photograph. The rift in Larsen C formed in mid-2016 and expanded until in July 2017 it lead to the breaking off of a large iceberg (known as A-68). The iceberg had an area of around 6,000 square kilometres, more than 10 percent of the area of the ice shelf. The Larsen Ice Shelf extends along the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, in the Weddell Sea.</p>
