House where Betsy Ross made the first American flag. The American Flag House at 239 Arch St., Philadelphia where Betsy Ross made the first American flag in 1777. After the Continental Congress had decided on the design for a national flag (June 14, 1777) a committee composed of George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross came to Betsy Ross and asked her if she would make the flag. She consented and her suggestion that the six-pointed stars be changed to five-pointed stars was accepted. Later she received the government contract to make all flags and this business was carried on by her and her daughter until 1857. In 1898 the Betsy Ross Memorial Association was founded and in 1905 raised funds to purchase the house and turn it over to public as a permanent memorial. Over 1,000,000 people subscribed to this fund.
