Golden eagle, historical artwork

Item # 1412134

Sheila Terry

Golden eagle. Historical artwork of a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). This large bird of prey inhabits much of northern Eurasia and North America, with the more northern populations migrating south for the winter. It prefers highlands near heathland and moorland, and tends to avoid heavily wooded areas. It feeds on mammals such as hares, smaller birds and carrion. It spots its prey from a lookout ledge or from high in the air, and catches it in its talons after a long, fast, shallow dive. It is a strong flier, and has a twisting and plunging display flight. Its wingspan is over two metres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
