Gaulard transformer. Transformers change the voltage of an electric power supply, enabling it to be used in different devices (such as the bulb at top). Early work on transformers was carried out by the French inventor Lucien Gaulard (1850-1888), who exhibited the design in London in 1881 with his co-inventor John Dixon Gibbs. Although Gaulard and Gibbs fails in their attempts to patent their design, it did lead to the first practical transformers. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
