Early work on transformers was carried out by the French inventor Lucien Gaulard (1850-1888), who exhibited the design in London in 1881 with his co-inventor John Dixon Gibbs. Although Gaulard and Gibbs fails in their attempts to patent their design, it did lead to the first practical transformers.
