Foot bones

Item # 1153543

Sheila Terry

Foot bones. Historical anatomical artwork of the bones of the human foot. At upper right is the upper surface of a right-hand foot. The underside is shown at upper left. A left-hand foot is seen from both sides: the outside (bottom); and inside (lower centre). The foot has 26 normal bones and 2 sesamoid bones. The two largest bones (at the back of the foot) are the calcaneus (heel) and talus (joins to the ankle). The structure of a single toe is shown at centre. Above it are three smaller artworks (from bottom): an advanced foetal foot; the two sesamoid bones; and an early foetal foot. Artwork from The Bones and Ligaments of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, 1842).
