Female (left) and male (right) mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) swimming. This duck is native to eastern Siberia, China and Japan, where it is found inhabiting forests with ponds or fast flowing streams. It nests in holes in trees, often up to 1 metre off the ground, and feeds on aquatic plants, grains, molluscs and small fish. It was introduced to Britain in 1745 and is now found in many British parks. Photographed in Sussex, UK, in winter.
