Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17. Artwork of US and NASA astronaut Eugene Cernan (1934-2017) saluting the US flag (Lunar Flag Assembly) left on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission. The flag had a horizontal strut to support it on the airless Moon. This mission, the last Apollo mission, landed in the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon. Cernan's co-lander was US astronaut Harrison Schmitt. They explored the area for three days (11-14 December 1972). Cernan was the last person to walk on the Moon. His departing words were: 'we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17'. Courtesy of NASA, DETLEV VAN RAVENSWAAY.
