Edwardis fig parrot (Psittaculirostris edwardsii) at Loro Parque Fundacion. This small parrot species is found in northeast New Guinea up to the Huon Peninsula. It mostly occurs in forests but also occasionally in cleared lands. Males are easily recognized with their brightly-colored heads, red breasts and bellies, mixed with a thin bright blue collar. This species gets its name from its diet composed mostly of figs. Other fruits are reportedly eaten as well but in much smaller quantities. The species used to be exported in fairly big numbers but it seems to remain common to locally abundant and not threatened by overexploitation or deforestation at present.
