Earth at time of Pangea. Computer artwork of the break-up of the supercontinent Pangea that formed around 300 million years ago and broke up around 200 million years ago. Pangea (meaning all-earth) was the first supercontinent to be identified. It formed as the Earth's continents came together as they moved over the surface of the Earth, driven by movements of the fluid mantle below the crust. The same forces caused Pangea to break apart. Areas at lower centre are identifiable as what will become South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, and India. The areas that will become North America and Eurasia are at upper right and upper left. Several such supercontinents have formed in the 4.5-billion-year history of the Earth.
