Early electric lamps

Item # 1411953

Sheila Terry

Early electric lamps, historical artwork. Three types of electric lamp are shown here. From left to right: an internal and external view of a Cance lamp; an internal view of a Sautter-Harle lamp; and an internal and external view of a Jandus sealed-bulb lamp. The lamps are all named for their French inventors. They have electrical contacts at top, and are arc lamps, producing light from an electrical spark crossing a narrow gap between carbon electrodes (spark seen in the internal diagram for the Jandus lamp). Electric lighting began with Davy's electric carbon arc lamp in 1801, and numerous designs were developed during the 19th century. Artwork from A Travers l'Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900).
