Colored engraving of Newton's reflecting telescope

Item # 1154180

Jeremy Burgess

Coloured engraving of Isaac Newton's reflecting telescope, known also as the Newtonian telescope. This was the first reflecting telescope ever displayed, based on a design of 1668. In design it is much the same as reflecting telescopes used by amateur astronomers today. For Newton (1642-1727), it was a second version, which he invented \...with fresh zeal and with all the ardour of youth\. It contained a paraboloid primary mirror and a flat diagonal mirror that reflected the light into an eyepiece mounted on the side of the tube. A 45-degree prism could be used in place of the diagonal mirror. This Newtonian telescope had a focal length of 15cm and a magnification of x38.
