Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), British author. Dickens is famous as the author of novels such as Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850) and Great Expectations (1861). His works are still popular over a century after his death, and have never gone out of print. His works were often social commentaries on the inequities of Victorian society. Dickens himself had to work in a factory for a few years from the age of twelve, after his father had been imprisoned for debt. Dickens married in 1836 and had ten children. He is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, in London.
