The excavations are more than 60 feet below the surface of the river. An Army of 3,000 men, under direction of U. S. army Engineers is harnessing the mighty Columbia River, at the $42,000,000 Bonneville Power and river control project, which will eventually generate 600,000 horsepower. The site of the dam is at Bradford Island, with the powerhouse and navigation lock on the south, or Oregon side of the island, the spillway on the north or Washington side.</p>
