Item # 1139856

Keith Wheeler

Beetle compound eye. Polarised light micrograph of a portion of the compound eye of a great diving beetle (Dytiscus sp.), showing the massed circular lenses of the simple eyes, the ommatidia. Each lens will produce a spot of coloured light and the thousands of coloured spots from the compound eye will form the coloured picture the beetle sees. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
