Apollo 15 lunar rock sampling, August 1971. US astronaut David Scott reaching for the geology hammer he has been using to obtain lunar rock samples. This photograph was taken during the Apollo 15 third lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA-3), at Station 9A near the rim of Hadley Rille. Scott has EVA checklists on both arms, and is holding a sample bag in his left hand, with a rock fragment in the bag. Samples obtained from this location include numbers 15595 to 15598. The gnomon, which is used to determine the local vertical, is positioned on the sampled boulder. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon, touching down on 30 July 1971. Astronauts David Scott and James Irwin spent a total of 18.5 hours outside their spacecraft, carrying out three exploration trips (EVAs) with the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Photographed by Irwin (seen in Scott's visor) on 2 August 1971.
