Work as a wildlife photographer means dirt, long hours and sometimes dangerous situations. The reward for such commitment can be seen in Pete Oxford's photographs. Driven by a passion for all things wild, he hopes the attention drawn by his beautiful imagery helps to preserve his wild subjects along with their often endangered habitats.

American Bison (Bison bison) male, Durham Ranch, Campbell County, Wyoming. Males can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, females up to 1,000 pounds. They stand 5.5 to 6.5 feet at the shoulder. Both males and females have horns. These animals once roamed the Western plains of the USA in herds that numbered 40 - 60 million animals. They provided food, tools, clothing and building materials to the Native Americans as well as European settlers through the end of the 1900s. Although their numbers were severely depleted they are recovering and still free range in areas such as Yellowstone NP, Teton Park, The Black Hills and a few Canadian provinces. There are also many private herds where they are raised for food production.
