<p>1920. A vivid Jagganath (Lord of the Universe) trio chromolithograph by Ravi Varna. From left to right, Baladeva, Subhadra and Lord Jagganath, in Puri Dhama. The Jagganath trio (of Puri) stands out from the other classical hindu deities in terms of their radical stylisation. It is thought that the images may owe much to earlier traditions in the area. There is a large and unresolved debate on the issue. This print by Ravi Varma is unusual in that two of the dieties are given arms and legs - attributes often missing from earlier representations which hark back to the main temple and "juggernaut" chariot carvings of the deities on wooden pillars.</p>
