Behind the Artist: SpaceFrog Designs

Black and white portrait of artist Katherine from SpaceFrog Designs and her artwork titled Star Sea

Sometimes psychedelic, always chic, SpaceFrog Designs' bold landscapes are always a treat for the eye. This month we caught up with Katherine, one half of the duo behind the design studio, to see what inspires her to create her beautiful compositions.

What is your background in art? How did you get started?

I earned a Bachelors of Art degree with emphasis in Oil Painting and Printmaking (etching). Since about three years of age drawing came naturally as well as experimenting and creating with different mediums. All of my family members were/are creative individuals, so I grew up in a very artistic environment.

Passion for nature is the core influence of my work. I'm creatively inspired by all aspects of design encompassing organic and every-day engineering. I'm fascinated by complex and simple relationships between colors, shapes, and textures often adding a touch of metallic for contrast and interest.

What was the moment you knew art would be your career—not just a side project?

When we were able to get by on our creative "passive" income and no longer depended on our "day jobs". It was a very exciting day when we were able to make the transition - we love what we do!

What do you hope people feel when they look at your art?

I feel a piece is ready to share when the design feels properly balanced both compositionally and color wise. My hope is that SpaceFrog Designs art is inspiring, calming and visually pleasing. I like to create work that evokes a sense of tranquility.
