What Sets Great Big Canvas Apart
There are countless wall art options, from inexpensive posters to high-end reproductions. While terms like giclée can make quality feel technical, Great Big Canvas focuses on archival materials and thoughtful construction that hold up over time.
In this article, we will look at the main aspects of the production. The engineering robustness of solid wood stretcher frames, the proprietary blend of artist-grade polycotton substrates, and the quality of the fitted hardware.
Opting for a hand-finished production means that each print is a lasting investment in wall art. The upcoming sections will provide insight into the technical features (UV-stable inks to twist-free frames) that extend the lifespan of the digital masterpieces for generations.

Solid Wood Stretcher Bars That Won't Warp
The most important part of quality canvas prints is the part you don't see. The stretcher bars. We use 1.25" solid wood stretcher bars on all of our canvas prints. Many of our competitors are using composite or lower-grade wood products that bend, warp, or crack over time due to changes in humidity. And when the wood fails, your wall art becomes a wavy, rippled mess in a matter of months.
Solid wood stretcher bars keep canvas taut and flat for years to come. Good quality solid wood naturally expands and contracts evenly with changes in the environment. This even tension across the canvas print will prevent the sagging corners and rippled effect that occur with substandard stretcher bars.
The thick 1.25" depth creates a sturdy, gallery-quality look with added dimension that gives the piece more presence on your wall.

Artist-Grade Polycotton Canvas Material
The substrate, the base material, must have a tactile texture while remaining dimensionally stable for digital printing. Great Big Canvas's answer to this challenge is artist-grade polycotton blend. 100% cotton feels and looks beautiful, but is hygroscopic (reactive to humidity) and subject to sagging. 100% polyester, on the other hand, is very dimensionally stable, but can have a "plastic" look. This blend shows the beautiful "tooth" of cotton with the dimensional support of polyester's structural scaffolding. The print will remain warp and sag-resistant for decades to come.
The term "artist-grade" also refers to a special, acid-free coating. This receptor surface grabs minuscule droplets of ink with almost surgical accuracy. The coating not only prevents bleeding, but it also preserves vibrant details. It's pH-neutral, so the canvas won't become brittle or yellow with time. This archival chemistry also keeps the material flexible and colors true to the original intent.
Finally, canvas weave also affects light diffusion, creating a play of shadows and subtle highlights that simply can't be achieved with paper prints. This texture and three-dimensional depth allow these reproductions to "look like an original painting." The result is an easily accessible elegance that provides a high-end, gallery-quality feel to any space.

UV-Resistant Latex Inks for Fade-Free Color
Great Big Canvas uses a giclée printing process, a fine art printing method known for its ability to produce exceptional color accuracy, detail, and long-lasting results.
This process combines high-resolution inkjet technology with archival-quality materials. In our case, that includes fade-resistant, UV-stable latex inks designed to maintain color vibrancy and clarity over time.
Many lower-quality canvas prints rely on dye-based inks, which can begin to fade, sometimes within the first year. Our latex inks are formulated with built-in UV resistance to help prevent color loss, so your artwork holds its richness and detail even with everyday light exposure.
Because the inks are water-based and low in emissions, they’re also safe for use throughout your home, including bedrooms, offices, and nurseries.
The result is canvas art that reflects the precision of giclée printing while delivering the durability needed for real living spaces.

Expert Craftsmanship in Every Gallery Wrap
Every canvas print we manufacture is hand-finished in the USA by experienced artisans. Our craftsmen stretch each canvas by hand, delicately stretching the canvas tight, making sure that the tension is uniform all around the print. We use precision stapling methods to ensure the tension is spread evenly so that there are no stress points where the canvas may sag.
Gallery-wrapping the canvas is a craft unto itself, with clean corners and taut surfaces that set professional canvas prints apart. Each corner is folded and fastened with methods developed over decades to create crisp edges that look great from every angle.

Sawtooth Hangers for Secure Installation
On every stretched canvas print, we add sawtooth hangers. These sturdy metal hangers fasten to the back of the wooden stretcher bars, creating a mounting system that is simple to use, that cannot fail under the weight of your canvas print, and that allows the canvas to sit flat against the wall while remaining easy to level and adjust.
Attaching the hangers directly to the stretcher bars spreads the weight across the entire frame structure rather than concentrating it at a single point. This works reliably for every canvas print, regardless of size.

Why It Matters
Not all canvas art is created the same. While many options may look similar online, the materials, construction, and finishing details all determine how the artwork performs over time.
Great Big Canvas delivers museum-quality art, blending the archival technologies of materials science with the artisanship of handmade production. Our warp-resistant solid wood frames, UV-stable latex inks and sag-resistant polycotton substrates are some of the ways we make sure your art will stay taut and true for years to come.
We believe art wields the power to inspire, energize, and transform people and places. Our team of curators and craftspeople are passionate about providing art that meets your unique vision and style.
