How to Choose Wall Art Based on Ceiling Height

There is something glorious about high ceilings. They open up the room and give you lots of wall space. However, it’s important to know how to choose wall art based on ceiling height. A too-big piece in a room with lower ceilings will instantly crowd it and close it in.

A piece that’s too small for a high wall, by comparison, makes it seem impractical and even disappear into the space. When choosing what’s right for your space, follow a few guidelines. Consider these tips for wall art for different ceiling heights.

Choosing Wall Art for Standard Ceiling Height

Standard ceiling height is 8 to 9 feet. When choosing pieces for these walls, balance size with the amount of space present. With these types of spaces, you must consider any furniture that’s in the room as well.

Aim to hang your artwork in the center, about 57 inches to 60 inches from the floor. Provide between 6 and 12 inches of space above any furniture. If you plan to use a gallery wall here, choose smaller groups of pictures.

Other factors, like the color and overall size of the piece, are dependent on what else is in the room. When choosing wall art for low ceilings like this, focus on the piece of art being about the same impact as a larger piece of furniture in the space.

Choosing Wall Art for High Ceilings

A high ceiling is typically 10 to 12 feet. This opens up the space and can make it seem far larger than a standard height ceiling. Wall art for high ceilings can be a bit more versatile. In these spaces, prioritize larger-scale pieces that are 48 inches or bigger. You can also create a vertical arrangement that fills in the open vertical space.

Too little art can create an empty feel. But you can also add character. For example, bolder colors are possible, murals could work in some areas, and incorporating 3D pieces could also be stunning.

Choosing Wall Art for Vaulted Ceilings

A vaulted ceiling, which is typically over 12 feet high, can be a bit more complex. These higher ceilings can mean much larger pieces of art, if you want to create a dominating, single focal point. It may also allow you to use more vertical pieces instead of just horizontal.

You’ll still benefit from pieces that are 48 inches or larger for these spaces. However, oversized canvas prints work very well. They can create a fantastic display and expression for the room. Large-scale elements that draw the eyes upward tend to be perfect.

It is always a good idea to plan out your space with intention. That means carefully considering all factors that contribute to the room, not just the ceiling height. That might include the color, the amount of furniture in the space, and architectural details that you want to stand out (or blend in). Use your wall art to make the space fit your vibe.
